the #treetips

1. Use very hot water: The first time you water your tree, use hot water. The hot water liquefies hardened sap on the trunk which frees up its circulatory system. Also, hot water is absorbed more quickly than cold water, so the tree will rehydrate faster.

2. Make a fresh cut: Before you bring the tree inside, re-cut the trunk at least 1"... then put it in the stand.

3. Pick a spot away from heat sources: Fireplaces, vents, etc. speed up evaporation which causes moisture loss.

4. Water, water, water: If the water level drops below the fresh-cut, the stem will reseal and be unable to drink.

5. Use a tree solution or tablets: To reduce needle drop, mix one of the below solutions or tablets with your water. (My husband and I have seen a noticeable difference in the lifespan of our Christmas tree whenever we use these!)

6. Use these gadgets to make tree care less stressful

  • Plug your tree light strand into one of these outlet covers and use the wireless remote control to turn your lights on and off. Now you won’t have to bend down to plug/unplug your lights.

  • Use a funnel to water your tree so you’re not climbing under the branches.

  • Put a tree removal bag under your tree stand to protect your carpet and make clean up a breeze when you take the tree down.

A HANDY CHART: how many light strands do you need for your Christmas tree?

A good rule of thumb is approximately 1 strand of 100 lights per foot of tree. (Easy enough, right?!) But if you like your tree extra festive, double that number! (Psst… if you want to print the chart, click here.)
