Today I was thinking about Christmas, as I always do, and I started wondering… why do we celebrate Christmas in July? 🤔

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’d celebrate Christmas every day, but how did this jolly tradition come to be? I started researching, and there seems to be a few different origin stories.

So today, I’m sharing what I found in case any of you are curious about the mid-year merriment, too! Turn on a holiday playlist and join me as I unwrap the origins of Christmas in July!

Christmas Down Under

Picture this: It's the late 19th century, and it's scorching hot in Australia. Eager to experience a winter wonderland like their friends in the Northern Hemisphere, the Australians decided to host Christmas-themed festivities during their winter season in July. It was their way of bringing the magic of a snowy Christmas to Australia!

Santa Sets Sail

As word of Australia's yuletide celebration spread, other countries started feeling the joy. In 1933 in Brevard, North Carolina, a girls' camp called Keystone Camp threw a Christmas in July event, complete with caroling, presents, and a surprise visit from Santa. As time went on, the idea started spreading like a snowball!

Hollywood's Merry Influence

In 1940, Christmas in July made its way to the big screen! The movie "Christmas in July" hit theaters, capturing the hearts of audiences with its tale of a man believing he won a contest and going on a gift-giving spree. The film's release further popularized the idea of celebrating Christmas during the summertime.

Embracing the Joy Worldwide

From the United Kingdom to South Africa to the Caribbean, people from all corners of the globe embraced the idea of celebrating Christmas in July. It became a delightful excuse to spread goodwill, exchange gifts, and indulge in festive treats.

Christmas in July Today

Fast forward to the present day, and Christmas in July has become an annual tradition for many. It's not just about the parties and presents… it's a way to capture the spirit of Christmas twice a year, making the world a little brighter even in the midst of summer!

So there you have it, the story of how Christmas in July found its way into our hearts and homes. Whether you're doing Christmas crafts with the kids, hosting a beach-themed holiday bash, or making mistletoe margaritas by the pool, I hope this festive tradition brings a little joy into your life this July!
